	ALL NICE THINGS
A kite and a sky, a tree and a bird, green grass and a
flower. The six of them took their places. Some children passed
by. They saw the bird and took out their slings. It fell onto the
ground with a heavy bump. They picked it up and carried it to
school with cries of joy. The zoology teacher did not know what
kind of bird it was; it was neither an oriole, nor a thrush or a
nightingale, although it looked like all three of them. The bird
was stuffed and forgotten.
They cut down the tree and made a table and chairs out of
it. It was closed forever in a fire-blackened kitchen.
The kite attracted attention with its bright colors. Some
children were following it and emitting, or so the kite thought,
friendly cries. So it came down lower and one of the children
caught the end of the thread. They tore it apart, pretending they
wanted to see how it was made, but it was too complicated for
them and they soon got bored. They threw the pieces away.
The sky, greatly distressed, collapsed in a lake and
drowned.
The grass was stamped flat by two lovers and died of its
wounds. The flower only remained, but the boy picked it up and
gave it to the girl before leaving. She fingered it nervously,
and no sooner had her beloved hid behind the trees, than she
started pulling off its petals - he loves me yes, he loves me
not. he didn't love her!
The faces in front of the monitors were strained. Nobody
could speak for a while.
"Heroes!" One of them couldn't help saying...
"Fools." Another one hissed through his clenched teeth. "How
is it possible to be so naive. It's their own fault, for choosing
exactly those transformation forms."
"All nice things." A third one added.
"And what would you have chosen?" Somebody asked.
"Me? I have always avoided contacts with anybody but... I
would rather be a hurricane, an earthquake or... a knife. Then I
wouldn't be in any danger at all."
